Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 1¼ cups warm water (95-105°F)
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 Tbsp yeast (instant or platinum)
  • ⅓ cup canola oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3½ cups all-purpose flour

Topping

  • 4 tbsp melted butter
  • 2 tbsp granulated garlic
  • ¼ cup parmesan cheese (shredded or grated)
  • 2 tsp parsley

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, granulated sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare Dough: Add the canola oil, salt, and large egg to the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in the all-purpose flour, about 1 cup at a time, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead Dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5-7 minutes on medium speed.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape Rolls: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and arrange them in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, spacing them slightly apart.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the rolls loosely with a towel or plastic wrap and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  7. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) while the rolls are undergoing their second rise.
  8. Prepare Topping: In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with granulated garlic and chopped parsley.
  9. Bake: Brush the garlic butter mixture generously over the rolls. Sprinkle the parmesan cheese evenly on top. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-22 minutes, or until the rolls are golden brown on top.
  10. Cool and Serve: Remove the rolls from the oven and brush once more with any remaining garlic butter. Let them cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • Make sure the water is not too hot to avoid killing the yeast; 95-105°F is ideal.
  • If you don’t have granulated garlic, substitute with 1-2 cloves of fresh minced garlic mixed into the melted butter.
  • For a richer flavor, use unsalted butter melted and mixed with garlic and parsley.
  • Parmesan cheese can be substituted with pecorino Romano for a sharper taste.
  • These rolls freeze well: cool completely, wrap tightly in foil, and freeze up to 3 months. Reheat before serving.
