5 from 90 reviews

These Grilled Cheese Roll Ups are a fun and delicious twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich. Made with soft white bread rolled around slices of melting cheese and then pan-fried to golden perfection in butter, this recipe yields crispy, gooey, and flavorful roll-ups that are perfect for a snack or light meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 810 slices of soft white sandwich bread, crusts removed

Cheese

  • 810 slices of your favorite melting cheese (Cheddar, American, Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, or Provolone)

Butter and Seasonings

  • 45 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened or melted
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Pinch of paprika (optional)
  • Small sprinkle of dried Italian herbs (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Remove the crusts from each slice of bread to make them easier to roll. Using a rolling pin or a flat surface, gently flatten each slice of bread until it’s thin and pliable but not torn.
  2. Add Cheese and Season: Place a slice of your chosen cheese on each flattened bread slice. If using, sprinkle a pinch of paprika and dried Italian herbs over the cheese for added flavor. Be careful not to overfill.
  3. Roll Up the Bread: Carefully roll each slice from one end to the other, encasing the cheese inside the bread to form a tight roll-up.
  4. Prepare the Butter Mixture: In a small bowl, combine the softened or melted butter with garlic powder if desired. Stir until well mixed.
  5. Cook the Roll Ups: Heat a non-stick skillet or frying pan over medium heat. Brush the pan or the roll-ups directly with the butter mixture. Place the roll-ups seam side down on the skillet and cook, rolling occasionally to ensure all sides get golden brown and crispy. This should take about 2-3 minutes per side.
  6. Serve: Once the roll-ups are crispy and golden with melted cheese oozing inside, remove from the pan and serve warm. They make a perfect snack or quick lunch.

Notes

  • Use very soft and fresh bread for easy rolling; stale or hard bread may crack.
  • You can experiment with different cheese types or mix cheeses for varied flavors.
  • Adding herbs and spices to the butter or cheese enhances the flavor but is optional.
  • For a kid-friendly version, keep seasonings minimal or omit them entirely.
  • If you prefer, you can secure the roll-ups with toothpicks while cooking to prevent unrolling.
  • Serve with ketchup, marinara sauce, or your favorite dipping sauce for extra taste.
